Shelving Design Tips for Homes with Crown Molding

At Soil & Oak, we love helping our customers create unique, custom shelving units for their homes. One question we often get is whether our designs work in homes with custom molding. In most cases, the answer is yes! However, while our ceiling-mounted styles are a beautiful and functional choice, they may not be the best fit for spaces with crown molding.

Here's why: Crown molding footprints are usually more than 2 inches from the real wall, limiting how close our ceiling mounts can get to the wall. This would result in a larger gap behind the read edge of your shelving than recommended. In this photo, you can see how close the ceiling mounts need to be to the rear wall to bring the glass shelf flush against the wall, which crown often prohibits.

If you have crown molding, we recommend considering wall-mounted shelving units, which don't rely on the ceiling for support and can seamlessly blend with your existing trim and decor. Our team is always happy to help you explore alternative designs that work best with your space!

If you're unsure about your setup or need advice on how to move forward, don't hesitate to reach out to us. We’re here to ensure your shelving is both functional and stylish!
